The Philosophy behind Pic_Index

Pic_Index is not a "wizard" to do everything for you. It is a utility to do the repetitive tasks you could do yourself, but would rather spend the time doing other things!

It is not intended to hide the way it works (though the code is highly compressed to deter you from messing about with it and protect its security mechanisms!).

It creates HTML-based image pages linked from a thumbnail index page, and these are stored in an album directory structure which is designed to be logical and easy to understand.

What it does is list any JPEG files in its gallery directory in a file called jpgs, and copy this list to a file called comments. It uses ChangeFSI and the jpgs list to create thumbnail images which it stores in a thumbs directory according to some preset criteria determined by the user, and then it creates an index thumbnail page in HTML and individual HTML pages to display each full-size JPEG image which it stores in a htxt directory.

Various factors affecting the way these pages appear can be preset.

If you alter the comments file, perhaps using the in-built comments editor, you can choose to have this text (or none) displayed on the image page and/or the index page as well in place of the filename.

The jpgs file and the comments file must correspond with each other to make this work, otherwise the wrong comment or filename may appear with an image.

There is a time-saving option called Remake HTML which does just that without having to remake the thumbnail images, so if you've altered a setting you can incorporate it.

Any settings current when an album is made or remade are recorded in a file called choices within the album.

The HTML files that are produced are straight-forward HTML files which can easily be edited/tweaked by hand to achieve the required effect.

The author considers it important that users (try to) understand the simple structure of an album and how the program uses the information to create the HTML pages.

Any modifications which the author thinks may tend to obscure this understanding will not be implemented within Pic_Index.

If you can't be bothered to try to understand how these things work, then perhaps Pic_Index is not for you!

If you can be bothered, you will find Pic_Index a useful and versatile tool.

That's a simplistic overview - but it encapsulates the philosophy which led to the creation of the Pic_Index application.
