Versions of Pic_Index 1.21 and beyond have been made 32-bit compatible.

Therefore, to run them, you will need to install the 26/32-bit Shared C Library on older 26-bit machines like the RPC and A series machines.

This is available from Castle's site at http://www.iyonix.com/32bit/system.shtml

On earlier machines you may also benefit from the other upgrades available there.

JPEGs can occasionally be troublesome beasts.

As Pic_Index uses ChangeFSI which in turn uses the JPEGroup software, some more modern, and some would say mangled, JPEG images will not work. An example of these is the progressive image.

Software exists to 'clean-up' such images back to 'standard' or 'optimised' format, and examples appear in the links below:

This facility of 'cleaning-up' is deliberately not built-in to Pic_Index, so that comments (including those inserted by Mavica) can be preserved.

Other JPEG-related utilities include:

Cameras often produce oddly or wastefully named JPEGs, and if Mavica isn't suitable, a very versatile file renaming utility can be found in Rename. It isn't easy to get to grips with, but worth the perseverance!

a random user-quote:

"For various reasons it became a series of moderate uploads rather than one big one but they all went fine and Pic_Index generated the necessary files beautifully. As I said once before, I wish I'd had this software a long time ago, it would have saved me many, many hours of work!" Mike Morris
