Pic_Index Compatibility
Pic_Index will work to an extent under RISC OS 3.1, but the colour picker module will need to be available and
functionality of this will be reduced, and the Comments Editor JPEG thumbnail display will not work due to the
absence of the JPEG SWIs.
This latter problem will also affect RISC OS 3.5 users unless they have the appropriate modules available.
These earlier machines will all require the new Shared C Library module to have been installed (see links page)
and to have the Repeat utility available in the library if it is not in ROM.
Barring will also be present with rotated images for users of unmodified SpriteExtend modules (see the Comp.Sys.Acorn.FAQ part 3).
Select
A problem with the rendering of JPEG thumbnails in earlier versions of Pic_Index has been highlighted by the release of
Select 4.29. The result of this was that Pic_Index was unable to display the comments editor thumbnail.
The reason for this was a programming error in the parameters of the JPEGinfo SWI within Pic_Index which did not show up in earlier OS versions.
This has now been corrected from version 1.20e.
Select 2
There has been a problem with RISC OS Select 4.32/4.33 in the creation of thumbnails using ChangeFSI where the latter
demands user confirmation for each thumbnail created.
These problems seem to have been corrected in Select 3.
It appears that this was due to a problem with the Select 2 CompressJPEG module, and that users can circumvent this
problem with Pic_Index and other CFSI-using applications by *unplug-ging the CompressJPEG module and re-booting.
So, at a command line prompt (F12 or task window) *Unplug CompressJPEGfollowed by a re-boot should effect this, and *RMReinit CompressJPEGfollowed by a re-boot should reverse it.
I am indebted to user Richard Ashbery for passing this on from the Select
mailing list.
I don't know if doing this affects any other programs.
Alternatively, users could revert to a version earlier than 4.32 when using Pic_Index.
Iyonix/RISC OS 5/32 bit
Pic_Index is now fully compatible with the new machines after a possible dynamic area problem, now resolved, which could
occur if PhotoDesk were loaded.
Richard Murray has 32-bitted the sprite-averaging utility he wrote for Pic_Index, and produced a 32-bit image size
utility. Pic_Index will now correctly size Exif files.
