Storing Album Collections on CD ROM
CDRom is a convenient medium for storing collections of Pic_Index albums.
The facility is built-in to allow reference back to an index page in a directory
above that in which the album resides. This allows many albums to be linked from
one master index page.
Equally, that master index for a group of albums could be linked from, along with
other album-collection master-index pages, an overall master index.
There is obviously no theoretical limit to the hierarchical structure one could use
to organise collections of albums.
![]() A Simple Album Collection Structure
A facility for auto-generating such indices is built into registered versions of
Pic_Index - see the manual!
Auto-running on a Windows PC - 95+
A CD as shown above can be made to auto-run the index.htm file with a simple text
file in the root directory called AUTORUN/INF
(which you will have to make in a long-filename archive or a DOS disc if you don't
have RO4 as its name has eleven characters) containing the following:
![]() The AUTORUN/INF file contents
Note that it has PC-style line-endings, and that the "/" in the filename will
be converted to "." on the PC.
This file will auto-run the index.htm file in the root directory of the CD on insertion,
which will load into the browser. On opening the CD drawer, the CD will dismount and close
the browser down.
This will save a lot of tedious explanation/instruction when passing album discs to
PC-owning friends!
If you would like the CD rom in My Computer to have the Pic_Index file icon whilst your CD
is in the drive, you can download an archive containing a suitable AUTORUN/INF file and
the icon file, PI/ICO by clicking on the Pic_Index file icon below:
Auto-running on a RISC OS machine
An application AutoCD is included which will offer the RISC OS CD user the option to run a specified
start-up file, by default 'index.htm', when the CD drive is accessed.
If the offer is accepted, any CD having the appropriate file will autorun: if refused, nothing will
happen at all.
The choices file will be found in Boot:Choices, if this is available, within an AutoCD directory, and
the behaviour of the program may be altered by editing that file.
Files for Auto-run and Icon on PC and AutoCD for RISC OS
The RISC OS app politely asks if you want to avail yourself of its services, and I
understand that the IBM-compatible PC auto-run can be by-passed by either holding
down Shift whilst the CD is inserted, or that the root directory can be opened directly
from a right-click mouse menu.
Alternative PC icons can be made using David Pilling's Scanning Software DplngScan (formerly
known as I**geM**t*r - a name we may no longer use due to copyright issues), and the .INF
file amended accordingly.
